Child and Family Programs Hit by State and Federal Reductions

 

Many state legislatures are in session or will be soon and are facing huge decisions about how the budget will be reached in the upcoming year. Some states, as is the Federal government considering how to cut back on expenditures for the current year realizing that revenue estimates for Fiscal Year (FY) 2011 are coming up less than projected. With H.R. 1 rapidly approaching expiration, the House passed on February 19, followed by the Senate on March 2, an extension of the continuing resolution to keep the Federal government running, and funding available until March 18. The delay of two weeks really does not give state leaders much assurance that major reductions to the state-federal spending will be reduced for the current year. The National Conference of State Legislators in a letter to Congressional leaders on March 1 indicate that if the proposed reductions are enacted that collectively states are looking at potentially $26.7 billion gaps this year, and an estimated $82 billion deficit in 2012.
