CMS Proposes a Rule to Improve Medicaid Program Integrity

On September 23, 2010 the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) published Proposed Rule CMS-6028-P that could increase administrative burdens for public health insurance providers, including school districts, and State Medicaid agencies nationwide.  The stated purpose of the proposed rule is to implement certain provisions of the 2010 health reform legislation, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), including, among other things, the establishment of procedures for screening providers of medical and other services in Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).  The proposed rule also addresses provider suspensions from Medicaid payments, disclosure of information about owners and managers, enrollment of clinical staff as Medicaid providers, and requiring clinical staff to obtain National Provider Identifiers. Public comments on the proposed rule must be received by CMS by November 16, 2010.  For more details regarding the proposed rule, please use the link below.
