ED Announces Nine Winners in the Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge

In a December 16, 2011 press release, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) reported that nine states will receive grants from the $500 million Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge (RTT-ELC) program.  The states are California, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Washington.  The RTT-ELC grants will help the states develop new approaches to raising the bar for early learning centers and closing the school-readiness gap.   Programs to be impacted include Head Start, public pre-k, childcare and private preschools.  Key reforms will include “building robust evaluation systems that promote effective practices and programs to help parents make informed decisions.”
