The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and its implementing rule establish the standards for protecting the privacy of personally identifiable student information maintained by the school district in the student's education records. With limited exceptions, a school district must obtain written consent from the parent or eligible student prior to disclosing personally identifiable student information. The final FERPA rule became effective on January 8, 2009.
