Proposed Expansion of "Race to the Top" Competition According to Education Week, President Obama is proposing to add $1.35 billion to the competitive Race to the Top grant program in Federal Fiscal Year 2011.  For 2010, only states were allow to compete for the grants, working in concert with education agencies and other stakeholders.  Going forward, the program will be expanded to allow individual school districts to also compete for grants, although the details for this change have not been finalized.  President Obama plans to make Race to the Top program a permanent fixture in Education.

Several states have made legislative changes to better position themselves for recieving part of the $4 billion in grants for the current Race to the Top competition.  More than 30 states are expected to apply for grants.
