Role of HRSA Within DHHS in Health Reform Legislation

US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius recently announced that the federal government will spend $250 million in programs to increase the number of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers.  The programs come under the jurisdiction of Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).  Mary K. Wakefield, the administrator of HRSA, which oversees community health centers across the nation and programs that bring health care to the uninsured, said that HRSA’s role in implementing health reform would focus on supporting maternal and child health, investing in the healthcare workforce, broadening and expanding access to discounted drugs for safety-net providers, and increasing access to primary-care services.
