DHHS Secretary Announces $28 Million Grant Program to Advance Health Information Exchange

On Tuesday, February 3, 2015, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell announced at a meeting of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) a two-year grant program to advance the adoption and use of interoperable health IT tools and services to support health information exchange.

Under the program, DHHS will grant as many as 12 new awards in the form of cooperative agreements to states, territories, or state designated entities to continue work under the same purpose as the original State Health Information Exchange Program.

In President Obama’s proposed FY 2016 budget, released on February 2, 2015, Congress would be asked to increase ONC’s annual budget of $60 million to $92 million.
