As youth age out of foster care, they are usually without medical coverage because of their exiting foster care. Oregon has new legislation that will cover youth no longer in the system up to their 21st birthday. The state's Foster Youth Connection stated that many former youth leave care with medication needs for mental and behavioral disorders. When their health coverage ends, they no longer have access to certain prescriptions. The bill will go into effect in May 2010 and will cover about 400 former foster youth between 19 and 21.
