Governor David Paterson established a Health Care Reform Cabinet on May 13 to coordinate and lead New York’s implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). This organization will be chaired by the Governor’s Director of State Operations, assisted by the Deputy Secretary for Health, Medicaid, and Oversight as well as the Deputy Secretary for Labor and Financial Regulation, serving as vice-chairpersons. Key tasks outlined by the Governor include assessing New York’s capabilities to implement PPACA requirements; identifying necessary changes in provisions of state law, regulations, policies, and procedures; facilitating communications about the PPACA among all levels of government, providers, and other stakeholders; and public outreach and education about PPACA implementation throughout New York State. State agencies represented in the leadership group and contributing to its efforts include the Department of Health, the Office of Mental Health, the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, the Office of Children and Family Services, the Department of Insurance, and the Office for Technology, among other agencies instrumental to New York’s efforts.
