CMS recently issued a proposed Medicare physician fee schedule rule that would cut reimbursement rates by 6.1 percent beginning January 1, 2011, as well as implement various provisions of the health care reform law. Under a recently signed law, a 21 percent cut in such reimbursement was averted, and physicians received a 2.2 percent increase effective June 1, 2010 through November 30, 2010. The proposed rule would, among other matters, implement a waiver of the Medicare Part B deductible and 20 percent coinsurance that would otherwise apply to most preventive services, as mandated by the healthcare reform law. Also, the proposed rule would implement a provision for incentive payments equal to 10 percent of a primary care practitioner's allowed charges for primary care services under Part B. The proposed rule will be published in the July 13, 2010 Federal Register, with comments due by August 24.
