On September 30, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded nearly $49 million in grants to 48 states and the District of Columbia for research and planning to launch the state-based health insurance exchanges through which private health insurers will compete for consumers when health care reform fully unfolds in January 2014. The HHS grants to states cover activities such as assessing information technology needs and planning the development of enrollment systems and call centers. Awardees notified on September 30 include the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Health Care Financing and Policy, where PCG is providing advice and assistance on health care reform planning.
