U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced on October 8 the awarding of $727 million to 143 community health centers across the country to help them build new medical clinics and bring older clinics into the technological age. DHHS officials said the awards are part of the $11 billion authorized by recent laws (P.L. 111-148, P.L. 111-152) for the construction, expansion, and operation of community health centers nationwide over the next five years. It is expected that an additional 745,000 patients will be served and the construction work will provide local jobs.
