On October 19, President Obama signed an executive order renewing the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. The Initiative was initially started in 1990 by an executive order signed by President George H.W. Bush and was continued by subsequent Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Key Hispanic educational priorities contained in the Obama order include, among other things, improving access to early learning and development programs for children from birth through age five, reducing the drop-out rate, and increasing college access. The U.S. Department of Education will administer the Initiative and the Secretary will appoint an Executive Director who will coordinate with the Work Group and the Advisory Commission established by the executive order.
