On December 27, 2010, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) announced the provision of bonuses to states which had increased the number of children they enrolled in Medicaid. The states are Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin. These enrollment performance bonuses were established under the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act. Overall, the 15 states reported a total of 874,347 children above the baseline this year. The payments are awarded to states that take specific steps to simplify enrollment, such as automatic renewal, continuous eligibility, and eliminating in-person interviews.
