On January 25, 2011 the National Center for Education Statistics released the2009 Nation’s Report Card™ in science.  The report reflects the results of the 2009 student assessments in science conducted by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).  From January through March 2009, NAEP measured the science proficiency of a sample of over 300,000 4th, 8th, and 12th graders across the country.  According to the results published in the Nation’s Report Card™, less than half of the students were proficient in science and a significant number of students performed below the “basic” level.  The report also identified significant ethnic and gender achievement gaps in science proficiency.  According to a January 25th article in Education Week online, the Executive Director of the National Science Teachers Association stated in response to the report “There’s not much here to celebrate.” The Nation’s Report Card™ in science comes on the heels of a report from another assessment, the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), which showed that the overall academic performance of 15-year-old U.S. students fell below average compared to 15-year-old students in more than a dozen other countries.  The 2009 Nation’s Report Card™ in science can be reviewed at http://nationsreportcard.gov/science_2009/
