On April 12, U.S. Department of Health and Human Service (DHHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced a new initiative to reduce medical errors, in partnership with private insurers, business leaders, hospitals, and patient advocates. The program, Partnership for Patients, is funded by $1 billion from the Affordable Care Act; but, as projected by DHHS, "has the potential to save Medicare up to $10 billion" in the program's time frame. The stated goal of the initiative is "to cut by 40 percent over the next three years the number of harmful preventable conditions such as infections that patients acquire in the hospital." American Medical Association President Cecil Wilson, MD stated that the group's physicians will cooperate to implement the program's goals.
