The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on June 8 a new grant opportunity for public health departments under section 4002 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). All States, the District of Columbia, and territorial governments are eligible to apply. The grant opportunity is designed to strengthen chronic disease prevention and health promotion activities. Applicants must outline detailed plans to achieve measurable outcomes for the top five leading causes of death and disability (heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and arthritis) and their associated risk factors (e.g., smoking, inactivity, obesity). A total of $38.7 million is available in FFY 2011 funding from the ACA’s Prevention and Public Health Fund to support these activities. The deadline for grant applications is July 22.
