Julie Meltzer, Ph.D.
Julie Meltzer is Senior Advisor for Strategy, Research and Design at PCG Education. As Director of the Adolescent Literacy Project at the LAB at Brown University, Dr. Meltzer developed the Adolescent Literacy Support Framework, and authored Adolescent Literacy Resources: Linking Research and Practice (2002) and other research-based professional development and technical assistance resources. A sought after keynote speaker, author, reviewer, conference presenter, and workshop leader, Dr. Meltzer helps educators build their capacity to effectively apply research-based promising practices to support the literacy development and learning needs of adolescents. Dr. Meltzer is co-author of three recent publications on literacy leadership: Taking Action on Adolescent Literacy (ASCD, 2007), Meeting the Challenge of Adolescent Literacy (IRA, 2009) and Taking the Lead on Adolescent Literacy (2010). Other recent publications include Thinkquiry Toolkit I (2010) and Guidelines for Developing District Literacy Action Plans (2009) with her colleague Dennis Jackson. A key focus of her current work is assisting school leaders to understand the roles, responsibilities, and actions associated with academic literacy development at the middle and high school level. Dr. Meltzer has worked in the education field for over 20 years. She taught at both the K-12 and college levels before joining PCG Education in 1999 as a senior research consultant.
Dr. Meltzer is a frequent guest lecturer, invited panelist, workshop facilitator, conference presenter, and keynote speaker. Speaking engagements in 2009 and 2010 included the National Academy Foundation professional development institute, the International Reading Association annual conference, the ACSD annual conference, the Massachusetts Reading Association annual conference, the Maine Summer Literacy Institute, the Massachusetts Secondary Reading Project, and two recent conference presentations at educational leadership conferences in Warsaw and Lodz, Poland. She is also a faculty member for New Leaders for New Schools and a professional development affiliate member of The Partnership for 21st Century Skills.
